Medical Emergency at College – Mom and Dad, are you prepared?

It starts with getting the call no parent ever wants to receive, “Hello, are you the parent of {your child’s name}? This is John with Emergency Services.  {your child’s name} has been in an accident and we are taking her/him to the hospital.”

I know this sounds so dramatic, but I received this exact call.  It was fall of my daughter’s first year at college.  She was riding an e-bike, rushing to get to a class on the other side of campus when the rear tire of the bike lost traction and she went down hard.  The bike battery smashed her left ankle and completely dislocated the foot.  By the grace of God, she was not hit by a car.  I received the call from the ambulance driver because my adult daughter was still conscious and asked him to call me.

What if she had been unconscious? She would not have been able to give her permission for me to speak with her caregivers.  In all of the preparation we do to help our children get ready for college, making sure we have the correct paperwork in place, should there be an emergency, needs to be a priority.
